Mahale Mountains National Park is a remote and stunningly beautiful park located on the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania. It covers around 1,613 square kilometers and is famous for its lush, forested mountains that rise dramatically from the lake’s edge — and for being one of the best places in Africa to see wild chimpanzees.
By Air:
Charter flights from Arusha, Dar es Salaam, or Kigoma land at Mahale Airstrip, followed by a boat transfer to lodges along the lake.
By Boat:
From Kigoma, you can reach Mahale via a multi-hour boat journey — either by private speedboat, local ferry (MV Liemba), or dhow.
By Road:
Overland travel is possible but extremely long and rough, taking several days. It’s generally not recommended unless part of an expedition.
The park’s isolation means few visitors, making it an exclusive and untouched destination for nature lovers and adventurers.
Chimpanzee Trekking – The park’s star attraction. Hike through misty forest trails to observe habituated chimpanzee families in their natural environment.
Lake Tanganyika – The world’s longest and second-deepest freshwater lake, perfect for swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, and relaxing on the beach.
Mahale Mountains – Towering forested peaks (including Mt. Nkungwe, the park’s highest at 2,462 m) offer epic hiking and panoramic views.
Diverse Forest Wildlife – Besides chimps, the park is home to red colobus, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, bushbucks, and more.
Birdlife – Over 350 species, including crowned eagles, hornbills, and numerous forest specialists.
Mahale is home to one of the largest protected chimpanzee populations in Africa, with about 700 individuals.
It’s one of only two parks in Tanzania where chimp trekking is possible (the other being Gombe Stream).
The park is only accessible by boat or foot — no roads enter Mahale.
The Japanese research team from Kyoto University has been studying Mahale’s chimpanzees for decades, making it a globally important primate research site.
July to October (Dry Season): Best for chimpanzee trekking, as paths are drier and chimps are easier to locate in lower forest zones.
November to May (Green Season): Lush scenery and excellent birding, but trekking can be more challenging due to muddy trails and higher vegetation.
Chimpanzee Trekking – Guided hikes into the forest to spend time with a habituated chimp family (treks range from 30 minutes to several hours).
Swimming and Kayaking – Crystal-clear Lake Tanganyika is perfect for water activities after a forest hike.
Hiking and Mountain Climbing – Adventurous treks to Mt. Nkungwe, sacred to local Tongwe people.
Birdwatching – Spot forest and lake species along trails and shorelines.
Beach Relaxation – White sandy beaches offer peaceful downtime between treks.
Mahale offers one of the most unique safari experiences in Africa: tracking wild chimpanzees through dense rainforest, then cooling off in a tropical freshwater lake. Its remoteness ensures a truly intimate, crowd-free adventure where nature is untamed and deeply immersive. It’s perfect for primate lovers, photographers, and travelers looking to unplug in paradise.
