Nyerere National Park
Location, How to Get There, and Overview
Mikumi National Park is located in southeastern Tanzania, bordering the northern edge of the vast Selous Game Reserve. It spans an area of over 3,200 square kilometers and is the fourth-largest national park in the country. Its accessibility from Dar es Salaam makes it one of the most popular parks for short safaris and weekend getaways.
By Air:
Charter flights from Dar es Salaam and other major cities land at Mikumi Airstrip, located inside the park.
By Road:
Mikumi is conveniently accessible by road, just a 4 to 5 hour drive (approximately 300 kilometers) from Dar es Salaam, making it ideal for visitors looking for a quick and rewarding safari experience.
The park is often referred to as a “mini-Serengeti” due to its wide-open plains and rich variety of wildlife.
Tourist Attractions
Mkata Floodplain – The heart of Mikumi, known for large herds of zebras, elephants, wildebeests, and buffaloes.
Big Cats – Lions are often seen lounging on termite mounds or under acacia trees, and leopards may be spotted in denser areas.
Hippo Pools – Popular for close-up views of hippos and crocodiles, especially during the dry season.
Birdlife – Over 400 species recorded, including lilac-breasted rollers, bateleur eagles, and ground hornbills.
Nearby Uluguru Mountains – Create a stunning backdrop and influence the region’s diverse flora and fauna.
Fun Facts
Mikumi shares its ecosystem with the Selous Game Reserve, one of the largest protected areas in Africa.
The Mkata Plain provides exceptional wildlife visibility and is a favorite for photographers.
Due to its location, Mikumi is often used as a gateway park for safaris into southern Tanzania.
Best Time to Visit
June to October (Dry Season): Wildlife is easier to spot as animals gather near water sources.
November to May (Green Season): The landscape is lush and scenic, and birding is especially rewarding during these months.

Game Drives – Morning and afternoon drives offer excellent chances to see a variety of animals.
Birdwatching – Year-round birding opportunities, with the best sightings in the wet season.
Guided Nature Walks – Available in nearby conservation areas (not always permitted within the park).
Photographic Safaris – Ideal for capturing animals on the open plains and dramatic natural scenery.
